One week earlier, as a "Riskbreaker" veteran in a medieval national security force, Agent Riot is sent to resolve an incident. Casual gamers may want to watch a let's play, as the story is still excellent. Vagrant Story was Squarely designed to appeal to hard-core gamers. Perhaps the greatest oddity about Vagrant Story is that its creators did not set out to make a game that would have as broad an appeal as possible, but the best game they could make. Even current-day technical marvels such as rim lighting make frequent appearances.Įnemies are also forced to play by the exact same rules as the player, a refreshing change from the norm at the time. Save for lack of voice acting, it's actually very modern with its use of movie-style cinematography. Every scene is perfectly integrated with the flow of the game, and the lavish amount of detail makes one wonder how this was done using the ancient PlayStation hardware. Its presentation is superbly done, in-engine. It many ways it was ahead of it time, among other things being one of the only 3D games of its era where in-game visuals were on par with the conceptual artwork. It lends itself toward action, yet the mechanics are RPG-based. Newgame+ Speedrun: ~4 Hours (skipping cutscenes w/ Start)
